Everyone’s focused on gold, land, cash, and hard assets. Fine. But here’s the uncomfortable truth: when the “end game” hits, it won’t be assets that save you—it’ll be access.
Who controls the networks, the rails, the data? That’s where the real choke points are. Owning gold bars won’t mean much if you can’t move, trade, or prove you even own them.
Maybe the real hedge isn’t piling up stuff—it’s building the ability to stay useful when systems shift.
The networks are going to be local, the people that will provide food and who reload brass cartridges and look out for each other. I wouldn’t be caught dead in a big city. You won’t need the internet mainly because they will control the grid. We will become hunters and gatherers again. Barter will become king. And I hope to hell you don’t live east of the Mississippi. After awhile gold and silver won’t help(though I have been buying) as you can’t eat it. It’s going to get real fucked. I hope the oligarchs end up killing each other, but I have more important things to think about- survival.
Local networks matter. Always have. Food, skills, trust — none of that is new.
But the “we revert to hunters and barter” story skips a step that history never does: power doesn’t disappear, it consolidates. Even in collapses, someone controls fuel, medicine, logistics, and enforcement. Barter only works at the margins; scale always re-emerges.
Gold isn’t food — agreed. But neither is ammo if you can’t replace parts, treat infections, or move product. Every real breakdown ends the same way: not Mad Max, but layered systems with choke points.
Cities aren’t the issue. Dependency is. Rural areas fail fast when supply chains break too — they just do it quieter.
The hedge isn’t land or gold or skills alone. It’s usefulness across systems — old ones and whatever replaces them.
I will take your points one by one, fuel can be made without huge refineries with wood and other natural materials, nature provides medicine, logistics, in a small town I can use my legs, enforcement the Second Amendment takes care of that(the special gift our Founders gave us). I consider myself very lucky, I live in a small town of 3000. We have a working gold mine very nearby and have a cattle rancher in town AND we have our own water. Very lucky. When the shit hits the fan, people(mainly in big cities) will get very desperate and when they do it will not go very well, just what the elites really, really want. Get prepared
Your town sounds genuinely well-positioned. Local water, local food, armed community — that's real.
But here's where we split: you're planning for a world that stays broken. I'm planning for a world that breaks and then rebuilds — because that's what history actually shows. Every collapse gets followed by consolidation. Someone always re-emerges with control of fuel, medicine, or enforcement. Usually not the preppers.
Wood gas works until a part fails you can't fabricate. Herbalism works until it doesn't. And a town of 3,000 is only a fortress until a larger, hungrier group decides it isn't.
I'm not betting on Mad Max. I'm betting on whoever controls the next version of normal. That's a different prep entirely.
You are the one who said “power doesn’t disappear, it consolidates”. I am 65 and my guess when the coast is clear for us to come out again I will be history.
Then we’re the same age, and that actually sharpens the point.
At 65, the goal isn’t to “win” the next system — it’s to make sure the break doesn’t wipe you out before the next system forms. Local water, food, arms, and trust matter a lot in that window. I don’t dispute that.
Where I push back is on mistaking survival prep for historical outcome. Even if neither of us lives to see the rebuild, consolidation still follows collapse. It always has. The people who endure the shock aren’t usually the ones who set the new rules.
You’re preparing to ride out the fracture. I’m preparing for the reality that fracture is a phase, not a destination.
Good article, all true. The reptile knows this is all true and speaks about it as if he’s doing what he’s doing for the benefit of all. As does Sam Altman as we approach super intelligence of AI. To be fair 90% of humanity would swap places with them and do the same. We are a weak, ego led, species. Like you, having looked at the situation back to front I can only conclude that we are screwed. The coming change is inevitable (unless Atlas 31 arrives and changes the game but ..dream on). You didn’t mention war, but a pale horse approaches. To be honest 90% of jobs will fold to AI in the next few decades so the reptiles may consider it more sensible to send the useless eaters that they haven’t (yet) killed with covid jabs off to the front line meat grinder. Personally I’m building a safe house and farm 45 minutes down river from the nearest city in the Amazon Jungle. When it all goes kinetic I’ll be fishing on the river and thanking Elon for Starlink 🙏🏻
Absolutely spot on Arkangel, I agree with you on the pale horse. All this rhetoric from the US, renaming the department of defense to department of war, the warships off the coast of Venezuela. Keep your eyes on South America. The next war front will be in South America.... Rich in Gold, Oil, Natural Resources and offers the perfect meat grinder to slaughter Christians under the guise of "taking down the cartel"...
Step 1 was to Unleash Fetanyl.... Now everyone and their mom knows about an Drug OD story.... A noble cause to fight for... The Middle East is too unrelatable to your avg blue blooded patriotic american, that ship sailed.... and the narrative around 9/11 lost its effect.
Destabilizing these places too could actually create some demand for USD temporarily....obviously Gold would catch most of the tailwinds. Take Venezuela, now you are loaded with Oil and Gold...
Thank you Marty, I appreciate the kind words! Thanks for pointing that out, I did that to avoid any algo. suppression. You never know these days so I thought it would be better to err on the side of caution.
I agree. Regime change is coming in Venezuela but I suspect it will be mostly peaceful as the majority of the country wants Maduro gone anyway so it’s an easy push off the cliff. Enter new leader, trade agreement with the US and things settle down. Peru is already lost to the Chinese. It’s like board game of Risk. I personally suspect Trump is more isolationist at heart, I fear war is more likely in Europe unless something takes out Starmer, Macron, Mertz and probably LaGuarde and Von der Leyen for good measure
One assumption here is those in control will not actively hunt down down those who just try and stay neutral or live off the grid. Women are the key. No women no babies. Babies are the key to the future. What society will they grow up in. Those in control are from the same ilk as who started the federal reserve. They were not ignorant then They knew what outcome fiat would end up like. They obviously had planned for this end game. If you saw the sounds of freedom then you can also connect what they really want. If you have all the power in the world then what does your soul really want. That is the question
The Great Taking by David Rogers Webb is a must watch on You Tube.
The book is long but worth a read.
Webb points out the laws and regulations are already in place to confiscate your wealth if in equities and the banking system in the US and Europe.
Best to have some of your assets outside of the equities markets. In physical gold and silver that you personally hold is the best way. Other hard assets are also good.
Thats a great point Bill, now we are entering into the prepping and self sustainability/protection conversation. This is definitely the next logical step. Lots of complexities and nuances to wealth preservation.
A conversation never ended I expect. I have often purchased "used gold and silver". Pawn shop sales in cash by gram weight and nothing less that 20 carat or Sterling. Ironic that I prefer Crucifixes. Buy by weight and carat on the moment spot price, artistic value is zero.
By cash do you mean short term treasuries? I wouldn’t think cash in the bank would be safe. And real estate is expensive now. Maybe holding onto cash to buy real estate later.
Agreed, I think for the normal everyday people our allocations would be different. They are probably much heavier land/real estate because of the amounts of wealth they are trying to preserve. I assume it is short term treasuries. 👍🏻
Depends on the severity of action against wealth. If you can't carry it running for your life is is worthless. Fiat can easily be made illegal as well. Barter system for emergency, the remainder of wealth as you are comfortable with. We all need to sleep at night after all.
Cygnus, thank you very much for your comment. You sound like a great grandfather and role model for your grandkids. I wish you the best in your healing process, and I will pray for you. All we can do is take it one day at time and choose not to live in fear during this tough cycle. God bless you and your family 🙏🏻
Great piece. I started to take your poll, but then decided not to give information on how the hoi polloi are preparing. (See what you've done?) Knowledge is power - don't hand it over to an algorithm! ;)

Different bets. Same age. Same history book.
Thanks Chat GPT

A good read and well reasoned perspective. Tiny nitpick is the repeated misspelling of Palantir. 😊

Great article by the way. Hits all the points.
There is no safe haven unless you can create the ecosystem that haven can survive in.

Very good article/substack. Grey, if you could I would like to read more about what can you do to keep yourself safe from this in more detail.
Thank you very much Raghu. I would say to start here with my Silver Road map, this is a once in a 500 year opportunity to create generational wealth! https://open.substack.com/pub/greyrabbitfinance/p/silver-the-roadmap-to-freedom?r=4119cx&utm_medium=ios

I see a crash in real estate pricing due to liquidity issues. It may lead to tokenization. I see blockchain in the future - not sure about crypto.
There is so much in flux right now.
Extremely well done. I rarely agree with 100% of anything but you nailed it. We will have global war on top of domestic war.
Thank you my friend! 👍🏻🙏🏻
I'm 71 and have cancer so I don't give a shit except for my grandkids. Trying to leave them in as good shape as possible. You have a great stack.
